about

93_BPM is the 1st album released by VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK, a New Orleans based collective of artists & DJs that host a free rave series called CONSTRUCTIVE INTERFERENCE in a dank tunnel in the Bywater. 93_BPM explores a recognizable hip hop drum pattern commonly used by artists such as Westside Gunn and The RZA. The pattern consists of a simple but effective combination of snare and kick drums, often with no added hi-hat or cymbal for texture and variation. Instead here we have the never changing pattern performed on a drum synthesizer where only the synthesis parameters of the underlying drum voices change over time.

Throughout the album, XDCVR (aka producer Jackson Shih) demonstrates his skill at manipulating the basic drum pattern to create new and interesting sounds. He adds layers of absolutely nothing and plays with the dynamics and parameters of the drum synthesizer to keep each track engaging and fresh.

In the Jamaican tradition, paying homage to the roots of sound system & bass music culture the B-side is a “dub”, if you will, of the A-side. Focusing heavily on sub-bass frequencies, the original track is hardly recognizable but remains the same simple 2 voice pattern.

XDCVR_ New Orleans, Louisiana

His debut on OOH-sounds *10100100000 throws some terrific 'fuck yous'—with renewed, raw and radical approach—chasing for a new lexicon to express the fragmented surface of current aesthetics, and we learn the lingo as we go. The rather elusive producer XDCVR certainly works here under the influence of cyberpunk literature, but focuses on a less romantic vision of the future imagined by Gibson ... more
